Recent disruption across UK airports has shown how quickly the failure of a critical system can have far-reaching consequences. While the incident was not caused by a cyberattack, it provides a useful reminder of why organisations need effective business continuity arrangements in place.

Thousands of passengers have faced disruption across UK airports following a technical failure affecting the country’s air traffic control system.

The issue, which affected National Air Traffic Services (NATS), resulted in widespread delays and cancellations at major airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Birmingham. Although the technical issue has since been resolved, disruption has continued as airlines work to reposition aircraft and crews and return schedules to normal.

NATS has stated that the incident was not caused by a cyberattack, with investigations continuing into the cause of the technical failure.

While this may not have been a cyber incident, it highlights an equally important consideration for organisations: business continuity.

When Critical Systems Fail

Modern organisations rely heavily on technology to deliver their day-to-day operations. When a critical system becomes unavailable, even for a relatively short period, the impact can quickly spread.

The disruption to UK air traffic demonstrates this clearly. A technical failure within a critical system did not simply affect the technology itself. It resulted in cancelled and delayed flights, displaced aircraft and crews, disrupted airport operations and thousands of affected passengers.
